Um jovem caranguejo vivia junto ao mar com sua mãe.

A young crab lived by the sea with his mother.

Ele caminhava de lado como todos os caranguejos fazem. Um dia, sua mãe disse,

He walked sideways like all crabs do. One day, his mother said,

"Filho, você não deveria andar de lado."

"Son, you should not walk sideways."

"Fica feio."

"It looks bad."

"Você deveria andar ereto como os outros animais."

"You should walk straight like other animals."

O jovem caranguejo olhou para sua mãe.

The young crab looked at his mother.

Ele disse,

He said,

"Mãe, eu quero caminhar direito."

"Mother, I want to walk straight."

"Mas eu não sei como."

"But I do not know how."

"Podes mostrar-me?"

"Can you show me?"

A carangueja mãe tentou caminhar em linha reta.

The mother crab tried to walk straight.

Ela moveu as pernas, mas também só conseguia andar de lado.

She moved her legs, but she could only walk sideways too.

"Eu também não consigo,"

"I cannot do it either,"

disse a carangueja mãe.

said the mother crab.

Ela se sentiu tola.

She felt silly.

O jovem caranguejo disse,

The young crab said,

"Mãe, se não consegues andar direito, como posso eu aprender?"

"Mother, if you cannot walk straight, how can I learn?"

"Nós duas somos caranguejos."

"We are both crabs."

Caminhamos da mesma forma.

"We walk the same way."

A mãe caranguejo compreendeu.

The mother crab understood.

Ela disse,

She said,

"Tens razão, meu filho."

"You are right, my son."

"Não deveria pedir-te para fazeres algo que eu próprio não consigo fazer."

"I should not ask you to do something I cannot do myself."

A partir daquele dia, a carangueja mãe nunca mais disse ao seu filho para andar direito.

From that day, the mother crab never told her son to walk straight again.

Ambos caminharam de lado juntos e foram felizes.

They both walked sideways together and were happy.
