Le Pêcheur et le Petit Poisson

Un pêcheur se rendit à la rivière avec son filet.

A fisherman went to the river with his net.

Il travailla toute la journée mais ne prit rien.

He worked all day but caught nothing.

Le soleil se couchait.

The sun was going down.

Il était très fatigué et affamé.

He was very tired and hungry.

Enfin, il sentit quelque chose de petit dans son filet.

Finally, he felt something small in his net.

C'était un tout petit poisson.

It was a tiny fish.

Le petit poisson était très jeune et apeuré.

The little fish was very young and scared.

« S'il vous plaît, laissez-moi partir ! »

"Please let me go!"

dit le petit poisson.

said the little fish.

« Je suis trop petit pour être mangé. »

"I am too small to eat."

« Si vous attendez et m'attrapez plus tard, je serai gros et dodu. »

"If you wait and catch me later, I will be big and fat."

Alors je ferai un bon repas pour vous.

"Then I will make a good meal for you."

Le pêcheur regarda le petit poisson.

The fisherman looked at the tiny fish.

Il réfléchit un instant.

He thought for a moment.

« Non »,

"No,"

dit le pêcheur.

said the fisherman.

« Tu es petit, mais tu es réel. »

"You are small, but you are real."

Je te tiens maintenant.

"I have you now."

« Si je te laisse partir, je ne pourrai peut-être jamais te rattraper à nouveau. »

"If I let you go, I may never catch you again."

« Un petit poisson aujourd'hui vaut mieux qu'un gros poisson demain que je n'aurai peut-être jamais. »

"A small fish today is better than a big fish tomorrow that I may never get."

Le pêcheur garda le petit poisson.

The fisherman kept the little fish.

Il rentra chez lui avec sa prise.

He went home with his catch.
