As duas cabras

Era uma vez duas cabras.

Once upon a time, there were two goats.

Eles viviam em lados opostos de um vale.

They lived on opposite sides of a valley.

Um dia, os dois bodes queriam atravessar uma ponte estreita que passava por um rio profundo.

One day, both goats wanted to cross a narrow bridge that went over a deep river.

A ponte era tão estreita que apenas um bode podia atravessá-la de cada vez.

The bridge was so narrow that only one goat could cross at a time.

O primeiro bode começou a atravessar a ponte de um lado.

The first goat started to cross the bridge from one side.

Ao mesmo tempo, o segundo bode começou a atravessar do outro lado.

At the same time, the second goat started to cross from the other side.

Quando se encontraram no meio, pararam.

When they met in the middle, they both stopped.

Não havia espaço suficiente para ambos passarem.

There was not enough room for both of them to pass.

Começaram a discutir.

They started to argue.

"Eu deveria ir primeiro!", disse o primeiro bode.

"I should go first!" said the first goat.

"Não, eu deveria ir primeiro!", disse o segundo bode.

"No, I should go first!" said the second goat.

Eles empurraram e empurraram, tentando passar um pelo outro.

They pushed and shoved, trying to get past each other.

De repente, ambos perderam o equilíbrio e caíram no rio abaixo.

Suddenly, they both lost their balance and fell into the river below.

The current was strong, and they struggled to swim.

Luckily, some kind people saw them and helped them out of the water.

They decided to be more careful and polite in the future.

A partir daquele dia, sempre que se encontravam na ponte, um se afastava e deixava o outro passar primeiro.

From that day on, whenever they met on the bridge, one would step aside and let the other pass first.

Aprenderam que é melhor ser gentil e paciente do que forçar e discutir.

They learned that it's better to be kind and patient than to push and argue.
