Those were very dark times. Excelsior seemed destined to succumb inevitably, repeating the fate of Miseridom.

Per le strade era sempre più raro ascoltare le grida spensierate dei bambini.

Rarely would one hear the cheerful shouts of children in the streets. 

La maggior parte delle piante erano rinsecchite ed i fiori appassiti. 
I draghi, ormai, erano soltanto una leggenda lontana a cui nessuno credeva.

Most of the plants were dried up and the flowers had withered. Dragons were only a distant legend that no one believed.

Era una terra senza guida, dove ognuno faceva ciò che poteva per sopravvivere.

It was a lost land without guidance, where everybody struggled to survive.

I pochi che per pazzia o per disperazione si avventuravano ai confini del regno, cercando di varcare le soglie di Lockwood, non tornavano più. Oppure venivano ritrovati, successivamente, esangui e senza vita.

A few gone crazy and desperate ventured deep into the borders of the kingdom trying to cross the threshold of the Lockwoods. They never returned, or they were found later, pale and lifeless.

Si diceva che al di fuori di Excelsior le tenebre fossero calate perennemente, quasi a suggellare la morte di un'era. E i dragovamp, che erano creature notturne, seminavano il terrore tutt'intorno. 

It was said that eternal darkness had fallen around Excelsior, as if to seal the death of an era. And the dragovamps, who were nocturnal creatures, spread terror all around. 

Nessuno era mai riuscito ad avvistarli. O meglio, nessuno era mai tornato indietro per raccontarlo.

No one had ever been able to spot them, or rather, no one had ever come back to tell. 

Il vecchio Barbaridor si era ritirato nel suo castello, sulla cima del picco più alto della Valle, dove si era circondato di pochi e malvagi fedeli. 

The old Barbaridor had retired to his castle on top of the highest peak of the Valley, where he was surrounded by a few faithful and evil followers.

L'oscurità avvolgeva tutto ciò che una volta era stato Miseridom e che ora non era altro che un cumulo di morte e macerie.

Darkness fell on everything that had once been Miseridom, which now was nothing but a heap of rubble and death.

Era questo l'ambiente in cui era cresciuto Frenk, un ragazzino sedicenne, dotato di una grinta che stonava con il resto dell'atmosfera. 

Such was the time Frenk grew up in. A sixteen year old boy with an energy that did not match the rest of the atmosphere.

Era orfano. Non si sapeva niente né delle sue origini, né dei suoi genitori. Era figlio di tutti e di nessuno, come molti in quella triste era.

He was an orphan. No one knew anything about his origins or his parents. He was son to everyone and no one, like many in that sad era.

A differenza degli altri adolescenti, che si erano ingrigiti al pari della loro epoca, lui era vivace, attivo, sempre in movimento.

Unlike other teenagers, who had become as grey as their epoch, he was lively, active and could not stand still.

I membri più vecchi del villaggio, e quindi i più saggi, si sforzavano comunque di guidare la gioventù, sebbene non avesse futuro. 

The eldest and wisest members of the village tried to provide some guidance for the youth, despite them not having much of future to look forward to. 

Ma era un compito assai difficile. Ancor più, con un tipo come Frenk, che non accettava la rassegnazione del suo popolo.

It was not an easy task, though. It was even more difficult with a guy like Frenk, who did not accept his people's resignation.

Era dinamico e convinto che esistesse ancora un domani felice per Excelsior. Se solo ci fosse stato qualcuno disposto a lottare.

He was dynamic and believed that happy days in Excelsior were not over. If only somebody would be willing to fight for it.

Mille volte, i saggi avevano cercato di dissuaderlo da questi pensieri, e di fargli capire che senza Semson il destino di tutti era segnato.

Thousands of times the wisemen had tried to discourage his inclination, reminding him that without Semsons no future was possible.

Ma lui non si arrendeva. Era testardo e decise di intraprendere una serie di spedizioni segrete.

But he wouldn't give up. He was stubborn and decided to undertake a series of secret expeditions.

Il suo più grande desiderio – il suo unico desiderio, in realtà – era sfondare la barriera offerta dalla foresta di Lockwood e uccidere o neutralizzare i dragovamp. 

His greatest wish - his only wish, actually - was to break down the barrier of the Lockwoods and neutralize or kill the dragovamps.

In questo modo, il suo popolo avrebbe potuto trovare i Semson nel mondo esterno.

This way, his people could be able to find the Semsons somewhere else in the outer world.
