A powerful king once ruled a poor, small kingdom and he forced its people to blindly obey his strict orders and decrees.

ذات مرة كان هناك ملك جبار يحكم مملكة فقيرة صغيرة وكان يجبر شعبه على إطاعة أوامره وقراراته الملكية الصارمة طاعة عمياء.

He took most of what his people gained by force leaving them poor and without any sufficient money or valuable possessions,

وكان يأخذ معظم ما كان شبعه يكتسبه بالقوة تاركا إياهم فقراء وبدون مال يكفيهم أو ممتلكات ذات قيمة،  

while his people had to work on their lands to plant and cultivate crops every year, and then the king took most of their crops.

بينما اضطرت رعيته للعمل في أرضها لزراعة وجني المحاصيل كل سنة، وبعد ذلك كان الملك يأخذ معظم محاصيلهم.

Only few lucky people could work in commerce or industry because the king’s taxmen rarely left any money or valuables for anyone to use them for trade or starting any new useful projects.

قلة فقط من المحظوظين من الشعب استطاعوا أن يعملوا في التجارة أو الصناعة لأن رجال تحصيل الضرائب للملك نادرا ما تركوا لأي شخص كان أي مال أو ممتلكات ثمينة ليستخدمها في التجارة أو للبدء في مشاريع جديدة ذات فائدة.

The people of that kingdom lived like slaves owned by that king for many years.

لقد عاش شعب تلك المملكة مثل العبيد الذين يملكهم ذلك الملك لسنوات عديدة. 

There was also a respectable wise man of knowledge who lived in that kingdom and used to teach people many things about life, science, literature, history, wisdom and religion without taking any charges from them.

وكان هناك رجل حكيم محترم وذو علم يعيش في تلك المملكة قد اعتاد أن يعلم الناس أشياء كثيرة عن الحياة والعلم والأدب والتاريخ والحكمة والدين بدون أن يتقاضى أجرا على ذلك منهم.

The people liked and respected him for his good deeds and extensive useful knowledge.

وقد أحبه الناس واحترموه بسبب أعماله الطيبة ومعرفته المفيدة الواسعة.

Hundreds of students used to come to attend his classes almost everyday.

وكان هناك المئات من التلاميذ قد اعتادوا أن يأتوا لحضور دروسه كل يوم تقريبا،

Many of them sent their children to him to learn the basics of different subjects from him.

والعديد منهم يرسل أطفاله إليه ليتعلموا مبادئ العلوم المختلفة منه.

The wise man was a humble, kind man who respected all the people even the children and teenagers who came to attend his classes continuously.

كان الحكيم رجلا متواضعا لطيفا يحترم جميع الناس حتى الأطفال والمراهقين الذين يأتون لحضور دروسه بشكل مستمر.

They liked him to the degree of enduring walking for long distances in the cold winter or the hot summer days to come to his classes.

وهم أحبوه إلى درجة أنهم تحملوا المشي لمسافات طويلة خلال أيام الشتاء الباردة وأيام الصيف الحار ليأتوا إلى دروسه.

They admired the knowledge which he had because he taught them about how to take care of their health, plant their trees and corps well, cure their diseases and organizing their work to finish everything on time.

وأعجبوا بالمعرفة التي كانت لديه لأنه كان يعلمهم كيف يعتنوا بصحتهم ويزرعوا أشجارهم ومحاصيلهم بشكل جيد ويعالجوا أمراضهم وينظموا أعمالهم لينهوا كل شيء في وقته المحدد.

The more educated men enjoyed listening to him telling them about the history of their kingdom, the old, brave, legendary heroes who lived many years ago and fought many battles to protect their country.

وكان الرجال الأكثر تعليما يحسون بالمتعة عندما يصغون إليه وهو يخبرهم عن تاريخ مملكتهم والأبطال القدماء الشجعان الذين عاشوا قبل سنوات عديدة وخاضوا معارك كثيرة ليحموا بلادهم.

One day, the king heard about that wise man and knew that many people used to go to learn from him without paying him any fees.

ذات يوم سمعت الملك عن ذلك الرجل الحكيم وعرف أن هناك العديد من الناس اعتادوا الذهاب إليه ليتعلموا منه بدون أن يدفعوا أجرا مقابل ذلك.

The greedy, selfish dominant king wanted to use that wise man to gain more money for himself.

أراد الملك الجشع الأناني الطاغية أن يستخدم الرجل الحكيم ليكسب المزيد من المال،

He summoned him and said to him: “You are teaching people freely… that is not allowed in my kingdom.

فقام باستدعائه وقال له: "أنت تعلم الناس مجانا...هذا غير مسموح في مملكتي.

Everything in my kingdom should be taxed.

كل شيء في مملكتي قد فرضت عليه ضرائب.

From now on, all your students should pay taxes to me to attend your classes".

فمنذ الآن، يجب على يدفع طلابك ضرائب لحضور دروسك."

The wise man said: “But, my lord, the people are poor and they cannot pay any money for anything except for some food.

فقال الحكيم: "ولكن، يا مولاي، الناس فقراء ولا يمكنهم دفع أي مال مقابل أي شيء سوى الطعام،

Most of my students will never attend my classes if you force them to pay taxes."

معظم طلابي لن يحضروا دروسي إذا أجبرتهم أنت على دفع الضرائب."

The king replied carelessly: “I do not care if they attend or not.

فرد الملك بلا مبالاة: "لا يهمني إذا حضروا أم لا. 

Even if one student attends every month and pays one penny for taxes, it will be mine and I want it." 

حتى إذا حضر طالب واحد كل شهر ودفع بعض القروش للضرائب، فستكون لي وأنا أريدها".

The wise man reluctantly obeyed the king and informed the people that he has to start to take taxes from his students for the king.

وأطاع الحكيم الملك على مضض وأبلغ الناس أنه مضطر لأخذ ضرائب من طلابه لتكون للملك.

This decision made most of the student upset and sad because they realized that they can never attend the classes again because they cannot pay the required taxes.

أزعج هذا القرار معظم الطلاب وأحزنهم لأنهم أدركوا أنهم لن يتمكنوا أبدا من حضور الدروس مرة أخرى لأنهم لا يستطيعون دفع الضرائب المطلوبة.

After a few weeks, only a few rich students could come to attend the wise man’s classes and the poor people felt they lost the joy and fruits of the wise man’s knowledge and started to tell the wise man that they missed his classes and teachings.

بعد عدة أسابيع، استطاع فقط بعض الطلاب الأغنياء المجيء لحضور دروس الحكيم وشعر الفقراء أنهم قد خسروا بهجة وفوائد معرفة الحكيم وبدؤوا يخبرون الحكيم أنهم يفتقدون دروسه وتعليماته. 

The wise man deeply hated the king and wanted to let the poor people benefit from his knowledge despite the king’s decision.

كره الحكيم الملك بشدة وأراد أن ينتفع الفقراء من معرفته رغم قرار الملك. 

However, many people came to him to ask him about how to treat their sick children and how to plant their trees and lands.

ومع ذلك جاء العديد من الناس إليه ليسألوه عن طرق معالجة أطفالهم المرضى وكيفية زراعة أشجارهم وأراضيهم. 

He gave them free treatment and advises because he did not consider that like formal teaching.

فأعطاهم العلاج والإرشادات مجانا لأنه لم يعتبر ذلك مثل التعليم الرسمي.

After a few weeks, the king knew from his spies what was happening and summoned the wise man to his palace immediately.

بعد عدة أسابيع، علم الملك من جواسيسه بما كان يحدث فاستدعى الحكيم إلى قصره فورا.

He said to him: “You are still giving many people advice and teaching them many things without paying taxes."

وقال له: "أنت لا تزال تعطي العديد من الناس إرشادات وتعلمهم الكثير من الأشياء بدون دفع ضرائب.

The wise man replied: “But, it was not teaching as before.

فرد الحكيم قائلا:" ولكن ذلك لم يكن تعليما كما كان سابقا. 

They only asked me about how to treat their sick children and how to take care of their plants and corpses.

لقد سألوني فقط عن كيفية علاج أطفالهم المرضى وكيفية العناية بمزروعاتهم ومحاصيلهم."

The king said nervously with a warning tone: “They have to pay for everything you tell them about; even if it is a simple piece of advice or just a guidance regarding what to do for anything.

فقال الملك بعصبية وبنبرة محذرة: "يجب أن يدفعوا مقابل كل شيء تخبرهم به، حتى لو كان ذلك مجرد نصيحة أو إرشاد صغير يتعلق بما يجب أن يفعلوه لأي شيء.

You will not tell them anything for free from now on; I am ordering and warning you.

عليك أن لا تخبرهم بأي شيء مجانا منذ الآن، أنا آمرك وأحذرك من القيام بذلك.

This is your last chance to obey me and make them pay taxes.

هذه فرصتك الأخيرة لتطيعني وتجعلهم يدفعون الضرائب."

The wise man had to bow and say reluctantly: “I will do as you wish, my lord."

واضطر الحكيم للانحناء وللقول على مضض: "سأنفذ ما ترغب به يا مولاي". 

The wise man had to inform the people in public of the king’s new order and warning.

واضطر لإبلاغ الناس علنا بأمر الملك الجديد وتحذيره،

They felt more disappointed and sorry for that decision.

فشعروا بالمزيد من خيبة الأمل والأسف بسبب ذلك القرار.

Some of them came and knocked at the wise man’s door seeking treatment for themselves and for their children, but when he told them that they have to pay the tax, they returned without treatment because they did not have anything to pay.

وجاء بعضهم وطرق باب الحكيم لطلب العلاج لأنفسهم ولأطفالهم، ولكن عندما أبلغهم أن عليهم أن يدفعوا الضريبة عادوا بدون علاج لأنهم لم يكونوا يملكون أي شيء ليدفعوها. 

The wise man’s heart was tormented because he could not help them to end their pains and sufferings.

وعانى قلب الحكيم من العذاب لأنه لم يستطع أن يساعدهم على أإنهاء آلامهم ومعاناتهم.  

However, when many poor people started to come to his house in winter with their children suffering from cold, fever and other diseases, he could not let them go without treatment.

ولكن على كل حال، عندما بدأ الناس يأتون إلى منزله في الشتاء مع أطفالهم الذين يعانون من البرد والحمى وأمراض أخرى لم يستطع أن يدعهم يذهبوا بدون علاج.

He started to give them the medicine and advice secretly at night free of charge to help them and ease the pain in his heart.

وبدأ بإعطائهم الأدوية والإرشادات بشكل سري ليلا مجانا ليساعدهم ويخفف من آلام قلبه.

After a few weeks, the king knew from his spies that the wise man was treating the ill, poor people without paying taxes.

وبعد عندة أسابيع، علم الملك من جواسيسه أن الحكيم كان يعالج المرضى الفقراء بدون أن يدفعوا ضرائب.

He summoned him urgently and said to him: “You are still treating the sick people without paying taxes.

فاستدعاه على وجه السرعة وقال له: "أنت لا تزال تعالج الفقراء بدون أن يدفعوا الضرائب،

Now, you have to pay the taxes and a big fine for disobeying me.

والآن، عليك أن تدفع الضرائب وغرامة كبيرة بسبب عصيانك لي.

If you don’t pay that, you will be punished by death; no one can avoid or refuse paying taxes in my kingdom.

إذا لم تدفع هذا فعقوبتك هي الموت. لا يمكن لأحد أن يتهرب أو يرفض دفع الضرائب في مملكتي.

Do you have enough money to pay me a compensation for my losses or not?"

هل لديك مال كاف لتدفع لي تعويضا عن خسائري أم لا؟"

The wise man said: “No, my lord, I don’t have anything to pay you.

 فقال الحكيم: "كلا يا مولاي. لست أملك شيئا لأدفعه لك.

I am just a poor man who wanted to help the sick, poor people.

أنا مجرد رجل فقير أراد مساعدة المرضى الفقراء، 

I have never taken any money from that for myself."

ولم آخذ أي نقود مقابل ذلك لنفسي.

The king said: “That’s punishable by death.

فقال الملك: "العقوبة على هذا هي الموت.

I will not put you in prison and pay for your food there."

لن أضعك في السجن وأدفع ثمن طعامك هناك."

The king ordered his executioner to hang the wise man for his crime.

وأمر الملك جلاده بشنق الحكيم بسبب جريمته.

The wise man seemed sad and silent when the soldiers took him to execute him.

بدا الحكيم حزينا وصامتا بينما كان الجنود يأخذونه ليعدموه.

His heart was filled with sorrow because he was thinking about how to help the people whom he loved and who loved him after he dies.

كان قلبه مليئا بالأسى لأنه كان يفكر بكيفية مساعدة الناس الذين أحبهم وأحبوه بعد موته. 

When the executioner took the wise man to hang him, he asked him: “What is your last wish before you die?" 

عندما أخذ الجلاد الحكيم لشنقه، سأله: "ما هي آخر رغبة لديك قبل أن تموت؟"

The wise man said: “I want to plant a small tree near my house." 

فرد الحكيم قائلا: "أريد أن أزرع شجرة صغيرة بالقرب من منزلي."

The executioner was astonished when he heard this simple, strange wish, but he let the wise man plant a small apple tree next to his house on the side of the road where there was a small grassy square.

دهش الجلاد عندما سمع تلك الرغبة البسيطة الغريبة، ولكنه ترك الحكيم يزرع شجرة تفاح صغيرة بالقرب من منزله بجوار الطريق الذي كان بجواره ساحة صغيرة معشبة. 

The people watched the wise man planting the small apple tree happily and watering it quietly before he was hanged next to it.

وراقب الناس الحكيم وهو يزرع الشجرة الصغيرة بسعادة ويرويها بهدوء قبل أن يشنق بجوارها. 

His last words to his children, neighbours, friends and students were: “Take care of that apple tree; it will help you to get a better future through hope and knowledge.

كانت آخر كلماته التي قالها لأطفاله وجيرانه وأصدقائه وطلابه هي: "اعتنوا بشجرة التفاح تلك، إنها ستساعدكم لتحصلوا على مستقبل أفضل من خلال الأمل والمعرفة."

The executioner did not believe what the wise man said and he told the king about that.

لم يصدق الجلاد ما قاله الحكيم وأخبر الملك بذلك. 

The king laughed and said: “That man is a fool.

ضحك الملك وقال: "ذلك الرجل أحمق.

He just wanted to make fun of the people and give them false hopes.

لقد أراد فقط أن يسخر من الناس وأن يعطيهم آمالا كاذبة.

How can a tree give them a better future?" 

كيف يمكن لشجرة أن تعطيهم مستقبلا أفضل؟"

After the death of the wise man, the people started to come to that small apple tree to water it and remember his last words without understanding how a small apple tree would help them to get a better future.

بعد وفاة الحكيم، بدأ الناس يأتون إلى شجرة التفاح الصغيرة تلك ليسقوها بالماء ويتذكروا كلماته الأخيرة بدون أن يفهموا كيف يمكن لشجرة تفاح صغيرة أن تساعدهم في الحصول على مستقبل أفضل.

No one understood what the wise man meant with his last words, but they obeyed him because they loved him and wanted to fulfil his wish.

لم يفهم أحد ما كان الحكيم يعنيه بكلماته الأخيرة تلك، ولكنهم أطاعوه لأنهم أحبوه وأرادوا أن يحققوا أمنيته الأخيرة.

After many years, the small apple tree grew and became a wonderful big tree, and the people started to come to sit under it everyday and chat for hours.

بعد سنوات عديدة، نمت شجرة التفاح وأصبحت شجرة كبيرة رائعة، وبدأ الناس يجلسون تحتها كل يوم ويتحدثون لساعات عديدة. 

They wanted to know how an apple tree would help them in future.

أرادوا أن يعرفوا كيف يمكن لشجر تفاح أن تساعدهم في المستقبل.

That was a puzzle for them and they could never anticipate what that tree would do for them.

لقد كان ذلك لغزا ولم يتمكنوا أبدا أن يتوقعوا ماذا كان يمكن لتلك الشجرة أن تفعل لهم.

However, their meeting under the tree almost everyday made them speak and remember what the wise man had taught them for years.

وعلى  أية حال فقد جعلتهم اجتماعاتهم تحت الشجرة كل يوم يتحدثوا ويتذكروا ما علمهم الحكيم طوال سنوات عديدة.

They started to consider him a very reverend man and some of them even considered him a holly man who was sent to them by God to help them.

بدؤوا يعتبرونه رجلا فاضلا جدا وحتى أن بعضهم اعتبره رجلا مقدسا أرسله الله إليهم لمساعدتهم.

All of them hated the king for hanging him because he deprived them of the best man who could help them to improve and endure their miserable life. So, their daily favorite speech was about the teachings of the deceased wise man 

لقد كرهوا جميعا الملك لأنه شنقه وحرمهم بذلك من أفضل رجل كان باستطاعته أن يساعدهم لتحسين حياتهم البائسة وتحملها. ولذلك فقد كان حديثهم اليومي المفضل يدور حول تعليمات الحكيم المتوفى 

and the oppression of their king. Some of them decided to write all the teachings of that wise man in books to preserve that knowledge for the coming generations while they were sitting under that tree,

وظلم ملكهم. وقرر بعضهم أن يكتب تعليمات ذلك الحكيم في كتاب حتى يحفظ تلك المعرفة للأجيال القادمة بينما كانوا يجلسون تحت تلك الشجرة.

and then they copied these books and sent them to the other villages and cities to spread that knowledge everywhere.

وبعد ذلك بدؤوا بنسخ تلك الكتب وإرسالها إلى  القرى والمدن الأخرى لينشروا تلك المعرفة في كل مكان.

When the king knew about what the people were doing he was annoyed.

انزعج الملك عندما علم بما كان الناس يفعلونه.

He hated the tree and did not want his poor people to sit under it any more.

فكره الشجرة ولم يرد أن يجلس الفقراء تحتها بعد ذلك. 

So, he ordered his guards to cut the tree down to end the people’s daily meetings under it.

ولذلك فقد أمر حراسه بقطع الشجرة لإنهاء اجتماعات الناس اليومية تحتها.

The soldiers came and cut the tree while the people were watching them helplessly and sadly.

فجاء الجنود وقطعوا الشجرة بينما كان الناس يراقبونهم بحزن وبدون حول ولا قوة.

All those who saw the tree falling down felt that the hope of a better future which was promised by the wise man was falling apart.

شعر كل الذين راقبوا الشجرة وهي تسقط أن الأمل في المستقبل الأفضل الذي وعدهم به الحكيم كان يتداعى.

They gathered around the fallen tree and started to cry for hours.

وتجمعوا حول الشجرة التي سقطت وبدؤوا يبكون لعدة ساعات.

They looked at each other hopelessly and started to ask each other questions like: “How can the tree help us to get a better future?" 

نظروا إلى بعضهم بلا حول ولا قوة وبدؤوا يسألون بعضهم أسئلة مثل: "كيف يمكن للشجرة أن تساعدنا في الحصول على مستقبل أفضل؟"

“Will the future be better or not if the tree is cut?"

"هل سيكون المستقبل أفضل أم لا إذا قطعت الشجرة؟"

"ما الذي يجب علينا فعله الآن؟"

One of the wise man’s students suddenly said to the people: “We can take some branches of the tree and plant them in other places.

فجأة قال أحد طلاب الحكيم: "يمكننا أن نأخذ بعض أغصان الشجرة ونزرعها في أمكنة أخرى، 

Trees can grow again if we plant some of their branches elsewhere and water them.

يمكن أن تنمو الأشجار مرة ثانية إذا زرعنا أغصانها في مكان آخر وسقيناها، 

That’s what the wise man has taught us one day.

هذا ما علمنا إياه الحكيم ذات يوم، 

لن يموت أملنا مع هذه الشجرة."

Many people cut branches from the tree and planted them in many other places in the kingdom.

قام العديد من الناس بقطع أغصان من الشجرة وزرعوها في أماكن كثيرة في المملكة، 

They felt so happy while they were watering and watching the small apple trees growing slowly as they were giving them more hope of having a better future.

وشعروا بالسعادة الغامرة عندما كانوا يسقونها ويراقبون أشجار التفاح الصغيرة تنمو ببطء بينما كانت تعطيهم المزيد من الأمل للحصول على مستقبل أفضل.

The small apple trees grew after a few years and the people started to gather again under many of them.

نمت أشجار التفاح الصغيرة بعد عدة سنوات وبدأ الناس يتجمعون تحت العديد منها.

They used to look at the new trees with happiness and more confidence because they had more hopes to have a better future.

وقد اعتادوا على النظر إلى الأشجار الجديدة بسعادة وثقة أكثر لأنهم كانوا يمتلكون المزيد من الآمال للحصول على مستقبل أفضل.

They started to say that the king failed in killing their hope and now they have many apple trees again.

بدؤوا يقولون أن الملك قد فشل في قتل أملهم وصار لديهم الآن العديد من أشجار التفاح مرة أخرى.

Some of the wise man’s students started to say to people that perhaps that was what the wise man wanted from them because obviously one tree may not be able to do anything by itself; many apple trees are better than one tree.

ثم بدأ بعض طلاب الحكيم يقولون للناس أنه ربما كان ذلك هو ما كان الحكيم يريده منهم لأنه من الواضح أن شجرة واحدة لا يمكنها أن تفعل أي شيء وحدها، فالأشجار الكثيرة أفضل من شجرة واحدة.

Some of the students asked themselves: “How did the wise man think that an apple tree could give people a better future?

وتساءل بعض الطلاب: "كيف اعتقد الحكيم أن شجرة تفاح يمكنها أن تعطي الناس مستقبلا أفضل؟

Why did he want us to believe in a tree and not to believe in other things like our religion or strength?"

لماذا  أراد منا أن نقتنع بالشجرة وليس بأشياء أخرى مثل الدين أو القوة؟"

None of them could answer these questions, but no one would ever dare discredit people’s beliefs in the new apple trees.

لم يستطع أي واحد منهم الإجابة على هذه الأسئلة، ولكن لم يجرؤ أحد على إضعاف ثقة الناس أبدا بأشجار التفاح الجديدة.

When the king knew what the people were doing and saying about their new hopes, he was enraged and ordered his soldiers to burn all the new apple trees where his people where meeting under them.

عندما  عرف الملك بما كان الناس يفعلونه ويقولونه عن الآمال الجديدة غضب أشد الغضب وأمر جنوده بحرق كل أشجار التفاح الجديدة التي كان يعقدون اجتماعاتهم تحتها.

The soldiers obeyed his order and burned all the new apple trees, and they did not allow any man to take branches from the trees before burning them to plant them again anywhere.

أطاع الجنود أمره وأحرقوا كل أشجار التفاح الجديدة، ولم يسمحوا لأي شخص أن يأخذ شيئا من أغصانها قبل إحراقها ليزرعها مرة أخرى في أي مكان آخر. 

The people watched the apple trees burning while they were crying because they thought that they lost all their hopes to have a better future as the wise man has told them.

وراقب الناس أشجار التفاح وهي تحترق وهم يبكون لأنهم اعتقدوا أنهم قد فقدوا كل آمالهم في الحصول على مستقبل أفضل كما أخبرهم الحكيم.

The king killed the wise man because he did not pay taxes so the people rise against him. 

الملك يقتل الحكيم لأنه لم يدفع له ضرائب فثار الشعب ضده
