I’d been stationed in Warsaw for more than a year when it all began. At the time I did mostly menial tasks: guard duty, actions, that sort of thing. 

Yo había estado estacionado en Varsovia durante más de una año cuando empezó todo. Durante ese tiempo hice principalmente tareas serviles: guardia, acciones, ese tipo de cosas. 

Occasionally we – my comrades and I – were sent to the sewers to stop smugglers. 

En ocasiones, nosotros.. mis camaradas y yo, éramos enviados a las alcantarillas para detener contrabandistas. 

The work in the sewers was disgusting. The stench of excrement refused to leave our uniforms for hours afterwards.

El trabajo en las alcantarillas era asqueroso. El hedor a excremento se negaba a desaparecer de nuestros uniformes aun horas después. 

Not that the work was in vain. We shot quite a few smugglers in our time. Only one or two were carrying weapons. 

No es que el trabajo fuera en vano. Les disparamos a varios contrabandistas en nuestro tiempo. Tan sólo uno o dos encontramos que portaran armas.

Back then we were already aware of the possibility of some small amount of resistance. The people were starving, after all. 

En ese entonces ya estábamos consientes de la posibilidad de que pusieran resistencia. La gente se estaba muriendo de hambre después de todo. 

At that point, however, we only faced the threat of isolated pockets of resistance. The deportations had not yet begun.

En ese punto, sin embargo, sólo nos enfrentábamos a la amenaza de focos aislados de resistencia. Las deportaciones aún no habían comenzado. 

Where to? My good man, are you not aware of your history? To Treblinka, of course.
You say you haven’t heard of that particular camp? How disappointing.


¿A donde? ¿Mi buen hombre, que acaso no está al tanto de su historia? A Treblinka, claro. 
¿Me dice que no ha escuchado de este campo en particular? Que desilusión. 

Yes, yes, of course you know about Auschwitz. Everyone knows about Auschwitz.

Si, si.. por supuesto que sabe sobre Auschwitz. Todo mundo sabe sobre Auschwitz. 

Have you ever wondered why? It’s because as horrible as it was, some people survived Auschwitz. There must have been thousands who got out alive.

¿Te has preguntado alguna vez por qué? La razón es porque así de horrible como fue, algunas personas sobrevivieron Auschwitz. Deben de haber miles que salieron vivos.

I believe the number for Treblinka is in the dozens, and only because those Jews revolted. 

Me imagino que el número de Treblinka se encuentra en las docenas, y solo porque esos judíos se rebelaron. 

Everyone was killed in Treblinka. At least almost everyone.
Once you stepped or fell out of that train, you didn’t stand a chance. 
That’s what awaited these people. 


Todos murieron en Treblinka. Al menos casi todo el mundo. Una vez entrando o cayendo de ese tren, no tenían ninguna oportunidad de salir con vida. Eso es lo que esperaba a estas personas. 


Like I said, at that point in time, the deportations had not yet started. We, my comrades and I, had our hands full combatting smugglers.

Como le había comentado, las deportaciones aún no habían comenzado. Nosotros, mis camaradas y yo; teníamos las manos llenas combatiendo contrabandistas. 

Many of the smugglers were children, young boys and girls, some barely older than four. They’d carry bundles of goods that weighed more than they did.

Muchos de los contrabandistas eran niños; niños y niñas pequeños. Algunos no mayores de cuatro años. Ellos acarreaban paquetes de bienes que pesaban más que ellos mismos.

Smuggling was their only chance of survival, because despite the lack of deportations, the ghetto inhabitants were kept in a constant state of starvation. 

El contrabando era su única oportunidad de sobrevivir, ya que a pesar de la falta de deportaciones, los habitantes del gueto eran mantenidos en un estado permanente de hambre. 

These smugglers were fast and cunning. And brave, in their own way. 

Estos contrabandistas eran rápidos y astutos. Y valientes, a su manera. 

There was one in particular I can’t forget, and I’d like to tell you about her.


Había uno en particular al cual no puedo olvidar; y me gustaría contarte de ella. 

She must have been nine or ten years old. Thin, like the rest, with fair hair and dark eyes. 

Ella debe de haber tenido nueve o diez años. Delgada, como los demás, con cabello claro y ojos obscuros.

I saw her several times while patrolling the ghetto, wearing a green coat that practically glowed in the grey filth of the place.

La vi varias veces mientras patrullaba el gueto, vistiendo un abrigo verde que prácticamente resplandecía en la suciedad gris del lugar.

What surprised me anew each time I saw her, was that she always seemed a little better fed than the other kids. 

Lo que me sorprendía de nuevo cada vez que la veía, era el hecho de que pareciera siempre un poco mejor alimentada que el resto de los niños.

She was thin, they were skeletal. Some collapsed dead in the streets. It’d have been obvious to anyone that she was a smuggler.

Ella era delgada, el resto esquelético. Algunos se colapsaban muertos en las calles. Sería obvio a cualquiera que ella era contrabandista. 

I stopped her once carrying a large bundle on her back. In broad daylight, no less. There was no rest for smugglers.

Yo la pare en una ocasión cargando un gran paquete en su espalda. Y en plena luz del día, no menos. No había descanso para los contrabandistas.

Well, seeing people with bundles wasn’t that unusual in the ghetto. In fact, you saw the strangest things.

Bien, el ver personas con paquetes no era extraño en el gueto. De hecho, veíamos las cosas más extrañas.

I could elaborate, but I’d be drifting off to another story entirely. I stopped her, and I questioned her.

Le podría elaborar, pero me estaría distrayendo en una historia completamente distinta. Entonces la detuve, y la interrogue.

“What’ve you got there?” I asked.
“Clothes,” she replied without batting an eye.


"¿Que llevas ahí?",  Le pregunté. 
"Ropa",  me contesto sin ni siquiera parpadear.

Looking at her innocent face, you’d never have been able to tell that she was lying.

Mirando su rostro inocente, no podrías haber imaginado que mentía.

Fact of the matter was that I’d caught her near a suspected entrance to those retched sewers, and that children were commonly used for smuggling.

El hecho es que la había cachado cerca de una entrada sospechosa a esas alcantarillas, y en las cuales niños eran utilizados comúnmente para contrabandear.

I suppose the Jews figured we wouldn’t shoot the children. They were wrong, of course, and we proved it to them rather quickly.

Me imagino que los judíos se habían figurado que no les dispararíamos a niños. Estaban equivocados, y por supuesto que se los probamos rápidamente. 

Oh, the look on your face. Yes, we shot the children, too. Later on we gassed them. That was the way things were done in those days.
Don’t I regret it, you ask? 
No.


Oh, la mirada en su rostro. Si, les disparamos a los niños también. Fue más adelante que los gaseamos. Así es como las cosas eran hechas entonces. 
¿Que si no me arrepiento, pregunta?
No.

Allow me to explain: those things were all done by another me, in another time, in completely different circumstances. 

Permitirme explicarle: todas estas cosas fueron hechas por otro yo, en otro tiempo, en circunstancias completamente distintas. 

Were I offered the chance to shoot a child right now, of course I wouldn’t do it. In fact, I’d stop anyone who tried.

Si se me ofreciera la oportunidad de dispararle a un niño ahora, por supuesto que no lo haría. De hecho detendría a cualquiera que quisiera intentarlo. 

But back then, things were different. We had our Weltanschauung – our world view – and we had orders.



Pero entonces, las cosas eran distintas. Teníamos nuestra: "Weltanschauung" (nuestra visión del mundo) y también teníamos órdenes.

So I did my duty as a German soldier and tore the bundle from her shoulders. I didn’t even get a chance to glance at the contents.

Entonces, cumplí mi deber como soldado Alemán y arranque el paquete de sus hombros. No tuve siquiera oportunidad de mirar su contenido.

She was already bolting down the street, that blond hair flying behind her.

Ya se encontraba huyendo por la calle, y ese cabello rubio volando tras ella. 

I raised my pistol, aimed, and fired. My shots missed wildly. The girl was smart. She didn’t run in a straight line.



Yo levante mi pistola, apunte, y dispare. Mis disparos fallaron terriblemente. La chica era muy inteligente. No corrió en línea recta.

Inside the bundle were a few kilos of bread and several sausages. Not much to risk your life for.
Except that for these people, the contents of that bundle were a chance at life.



Dentro del paquete encontramos unos cuantos kilos de pan y varias salchichas. No mucho para arriesgar tu vida. 
Solo que para estas personas, los contenidos del paquete eran un cambio de vida.

Your face says it all. You think me a monster, at best a former one. 
How could I try to shoot a little girl?


Su rostro lo dice todo. Piensa que soy un monstruo, a lo mejor en tiempos pasados. Como es que pude dispararle a una pequeña niña. 

Well, I was twenty-three at the time. I’d grown up with National Socialism and accepted it as part of my self, including the racial dogma.

Si bien, tenía veintitrés años entonces. Había crecido dentro de un Socialismo Nacional y lo había aceptado como parte de mi persona, incluido el dogma racial. 

Jews, to me – to all of us there in Warsaw – were pests that needed to be destroyed. A cancer that would corrupt the Reich from the inside, if you will.

Los judíos, para todos nosotros en Varsovia, eran una peste que tenía que ser destruida. Un cáncer que corrompía al "Reich" desde adentro, si mejor le parece.

The girl was a child, certainly, but children grow into adults if you let them, and adults either breed more children or become saboteurs, partisans, or something similar. 
That was what we believed. 


La chica era aún una niña, seguro, pero los niños crecen a adultos si se les permite, y estos adultos engendran más niños o se vuelven saboteadores, partisanos o algo similar. 
Eso es lo que creíamos.


A few weeks later, it was the summer of 1942, we began deportations. Resettlement, we told them. For a short while, they actually believed us. 

Un par de semanas después, era el verano de 1942, y empezamos las deportaciones. Restablecimiento, les dijimos y por un tiempo, nos creyeron. 

The Jews would come to the Umschlagplatz, where the trains waited to take them away to Treblinka and its ever-hungry gas chambers. 

Los judíos venían al: "Umschalagplatz" donde los trenes aguardaban para llevarlos a Treblinka y sus hambrientas cámaras de gas. 

They walked in a long column, a sea of exhausted grey, worn down by fatigue, starvation, and the bundles they carried.

Caminaban en una columna larga, un mar de gris exhausto, desgastado con fatiga, hambre y los paquetes que llevaban.

In that grey mass, a green coat caught my eye. She was walking with a group of children, orphans, probably, taking in the scene around her in silence.

En esa masa gris, un abrigo verde llamo mi atención. Ella caminaba con un grupo de niños, huérfanos probablemente, completando la escena alrededor de ella en silencio. 

Had she walked on past me, had she waited at the Umschlagplatz and boarded that train, I would have forgotten about her by the end of the war.

Si hubiera tan solo pasado junto a mí, si hubiera tan solo esperado en el "Unschlagplats" y abordado el tren, me hubiera olvidado de ella para el final de la guerra. 

She’d have died as the rest of them did, in naked agony.
Instead, she managed to delay the inevitable by just a little longer.

Ella habría muerto como el resto de ellos, en una desnuda agonía. En su lugar, se las arregló para retrasar lo inevitable tan solo un poco más. 

Even as the column moved, I watched her slowly drift to its edge. Now she was ten meters away from me, now five.

Incluso cuando la columna se movía, yo la veía dirigirse lentamente hacia su borde. Ahora a diez metros de distancia, ahora a cinco metros de distancia. 


Up close, I noticed how dirty her green coat really was. It’d only appeared to glow with colour because of all the grey grime around her.

De cerca, pude notar lo sucio que se encontraba su abrigo. En realidad solo parecía resplandecer por toda la mugre gris que nos rodeaba. 

Quite suddenly – I was absent-mindedly observing the coat – she broke from the ranks of the condemned and made a mad dash for the open door of an abandoned building.

Y así de repente, me encontré distraído observando su abrigo, ella se separó de las filas de los condenados e hizo una carrera loca hacía la puerta abierta de un edificio abandonado. 

I didn’t hesitate. I pulled out my pistol and gave chase, firing twice as I did.

Y no lo dudé. Saqué mi pistola y la comencé a cazar, disparando dos veces en lo que corría tras ella. 

Two of my comrades joined me. We raced up the stairs of the old house together, grey in grey, no colour, just filth and dust. 

Dos de mis camaradas se me unieron. Subimos corriendo las escaleras de la vieja casona, gris en gris, sin color, solo suciedad y polvo.

I knew I’d have to catch her in order to shoot her. She was just too quick on her feet, too nimble, for me to get a good shot as she fled.

Sabía que debía atraparla para poderle disparar. Era solo que era demasiado ágil, para poder dispararle mientras huía. 

We followed the sound of her pattering footsteps, up and up. Our legs were longer and we were better nourished. We were faster.

Seguimos el sonido de sus apresurados pasos, más y más arriba. Nuestras piernas eran más largas y mejor alimentadas. Nosotros éramos más rápidos. 

On the second landing, I caught sight of her again and, foolishly, fired. I missed, she ducked into a room.

En el segundo rellano, la vi de nuevo y tontamente dispare. Fallé. Y ella se metió dentro de una habitación.  

All three of us followed and stopped short the minute we entered that room. In the back of the wall was a hole, barely large enough for a child to fit through.

Los tres la seguimos y nos detuvimos por un minuto al entrar a la habitación. En la parte posterior de la pared había un agujero, del tamaño en el que un niño podría pasar fácilmente.

In fact, a well-nourished child probably wouldn’t have made it. We definitely didn’t stand a chance.

De hecho, un niño bien alimentado probablemente no la habría hecho. Nosotros definitivamente no teníamos oportunidad. 

Peering through the hole, I saw the flat roof of the building’s annex on the other side. No green coat, no fair hair. We’d lost the little smuggler.

Mirando a través del agujero, vi la azotea de los edificios anexos al otro lado. Ningún abrigo verde, ningún cabello rubio. Habíamos perdido a la pequeña contrabandista. 

You’re smiling. Ah, I see. The idea of the little Jew escaping from the big bad Germans appeals to you.



Lo veo sonreír. Ya veo. La idea de que la pequeña judía escapara de los grandes malos alemanes le agrada. 

Well then, you’re in for a treat. I haven’t even reached the good part yet.


Así entonces usted está aquí para un convite.  Y ni siquiera eh llegado a la mejor parte.

The old man whom the journalist has come to interview is in turns polite and scornful. He tells his visitor a story about the war. It takes place in Warsaw during the final years of a unique madness.
It’s not his story, and nobody else will ever tell it.
